Welcome to your course! As you begin your learning journey, we are excited to introduce you to a powerful new tool available right here in Brightspace: AI Tutor.
Students need help outside office hours, and instructors can’t be available around the clock. Lumi Tutor gives students instant, course-grounded academic support the moment they need it, while surfacing what they’re struggling with back to instructors — so common pain points get fixed at the course-design level, not just patched one student at a time
What is the AI Tutor?
- Think of the AI Tutor as a knowledgeable teaching assistant who has read every page of our course material and is available to help you whenever you need it—day or night.Unlike general AI tools you might have used before, our AI Tutor is specifically “trained” on this course. This means when you ask it a question, it looks at our specific readings, documents, and syllabus to give you an answer that is relevant to what we are studying
Where to Find It
- Accessing help is easy! You can find the AI Tutor at any time by selecting the AI Tutor link located in the top navigation bar of your Brightspace course.
What can it do?
- Answer questions grounded strictly in that course’s published materials — readings, lecture pages, assignment briefs, quizzes, announcements, video transcripts, syllabus — and cite the source so students can verify it
- Run Study Mode: generate summaries, key terms, flashcards, and personalized practice questions (multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, drag-the-words, true/false) via H5P, entirely from course content
- Generate a personalized, schedule-aligned study plan based on a student’s course calendar and progress
- Help students navigate the course — due dates, module structure, where to find materials
- Enforce academic-integrity boundaries by design: it won’t complete or submit assessed work, answer quiz/exam questions directly, or write essays for a student
- Feed instructor-facing insights — trend reports on frequently asked questions and topics students struggle with, enabling early intervention and better course design
How the AI Tutor Can Help You
The AI Tutor is more than just a search bar; it’s an interactive partner designed to help you master the material. Here are a few ways you can get the most out of it:
- Clarify Complex Concepts: Stuck on a difficult paragraph or a confusing theory? Ask the AI Tutor: “Can you explain the concept of [Topic] in simpler terms?“
- Stay on Track: Need to know when your next milestone is? Ask: “When is my next assignment due?” or “What should I focus on this week?“
- Active Study Sessions: You can turn passive reading into active practice. Try asking the AI Tutor to help you study by using these special commands:
- @quiz: “Give me a @quiz on Chapter 2.“
- @flashcards: “Create some @flashcards for the key terms in this module.“
- @true_false: “Test my knowledge with some @true_false questions about today’s reading.“
- Summarize and Review: If you’ve just finished a long module, ask: “What are the three most important takeaways from this section?“
What is the expected output?
For students: A cited, course-grounded answer, with a jump-back link to the source material, and — on request — Study Mode outputs like quizzes, flashcards, or a study plan.
Remember that AI-generated responses are not always perfect. Review the information the AI Tutor provides and double-check any critical information using your course materials, assignment instructions, or other trusted resources. If you are unsure about something related to your coursework or academic requirements, reach out to your professor or appropriate support team for clarification.
