Long Island University has partnered with Campus Labs to utilize their product Baseline for the design and delivery of surveys to students, faculty, or staff. University faculty and staff have access to an online tool called CampusLabs Baseline (formerly known as StudentVoice). This tool allows the creation and posting of surveys connected to professional University work.

The power of this tool is with its support.  CampusLabs Baseline provides four types of support for users.

  1. CampusLabs has written and video information about general methodological questions at their online support site.  Are you new to CampusLabs and don’t know what you have to do to get a project started?  Videos walk you through the procedures.  Want to know more about the pros and cons of utilizing a mass mailing vs. posting a generic url for potential survey respondents?  CampusLabs has a webpage on that.  Do you need a method for selecting a drawing winner from among your respondents?  CampusLabs offers quick and easy directions that you can follow to randomly select someone.   There is much more information like this, and even full webinar training sessions, on their support site.
  2. There is a CampusLabs Specialist in Buffalo assigned to do one-on-one survey development support with LIU survey users – that Specialist is automatically notified when a user initiates a new survey project, and they look over your instrument to see what expertise they might offer in regard to wording, item format, question order, etc.
  3. CampusLabs Baseline offers a number of tools to support your projects, including a sample size calculator, immediate and ongoing frequency/count distributions with graphical analysis, and cross-tab analysis.  Both reports and raw data may be exported in Excel.
  4. The Baseline tool connects users to other CampusLabs users in a community that shares best ideas and examples.

Once you have an account, you can see information (including videos) about starting to work with CampusLabs Baseline, and about other topics that may be helpful for you, at http://baselinesupport.campuslabs.com/hc/en-us.

Doctoral Committee Chairs who want Doctoral Students to use CampusLabs for Survey Research need to complete the LIU Doctoral Program CampusLabs Student Account Request 2-21 form and email it with the IRB Approval Letter.

  1. CampusLabs helps with survey research only.
  2. Only faculty may request (open) projects. Doctoral students may use CampusLabs for their doctoral research after IRB approval has been granted. The Doctoral Committee Chair must:
    1. Complete the LIU Doctoral Program CampusLabs Student Account Request form and email it with a copy of the IRB Approval Letter to Andrea.McLoughlin@liu.edu.
    2. Log in to CampusLabs and Request a Project, making sure to put in the Notes section that
“This formal research project requires that access be restricted to project investigators only, so it should be put in the Department for Projects Requiring Confidentiality. Only the following people should have access:  [insert the Doctoral Committee Chair and student LIU email addresses].”
  3. Whenever CampusLabs must create or update your survey, it can take them up to a week or more behind the scenes. This depends on their availability since they are managing other schools as well as LIU, but it also depends on the size and complexity of the work needed for your survey. Just know that you should start any CampusLabs survey project at least 3 or 4 weeks in advance of your data collection start date.
  4. Once a project is requested:
    1. CampusLabs will email those working on it when the Project Dashboard page has been created.
    2. Either the Chair or Doctoral Student may then log in, click the Baseline button, the Manage Projects button, write in the project title, and when brought to the Project Dashboard, upload a Word version of the survey in the space for it.
    3. CampusLabs will then email those working on it when the survey is ready for Preview.
    4. The Chair and Doctoral Student may then log in, click the Baseline button, click the Manage Projects button, write in the project title, and when brought to the Project Dashboard, download the Word version of the Project Outline.
    5. Then click the Preview button to walk through the survey as if it is live in order to look for corrections needed. Do that with the Word version of the Outline file open, and use Track Changes to make note on the Outline of anything in the online survey that needs to be changed. When finished, the edited Outline may either be uploaded in the same area as the original Word version of the survey or emailed to CampusLabs with a request that the project be updated.
    6. CampusLabs will then email those working on it when the survey is ready for Preview again, to be sure any needed changes were made.
    7. Once the survey is completely ready, the generic web link url from the “Administration Methods” box on the Project Dashboard may be mailed out to potential respondents.
    8. Either the Chair or Doctoral Student may then log in at any time to view or export reports or raw results.
  5. In results, participant identity will be anonymized – Project Investigators should know before beginning a project that this anonymity is never breached.  If a project needs to track identity (for longitudinal or comparison work), then Project Investigators may either:- inform participants to assign themselves a unique ID that they will need to use whenever they are answering a survey; or- be explicit in the Informed Consent (which can be written into the front of the survey) that the data, while confidential, will NOT be anonymous. Participants can then be asked to SELF-IDENTIFY as the first question on each survey.

Guided Practice for Building Your Own Surveys in Baseline

The best way to learn a new task is to jump in and do it yourself! Below is a recording of a guided practice for building your own surveys in Baseline using Self-Service Builder. In this guided practice, you can follow along with the trainer to recreate the survey we’ve added at the bottom of this article. The practice reviews display logic, skip logic, coding and scaling, and creating custom text boxes.

Once you’ve built the survey, you can check your work by comparing your survey’s outline to the Correct SSB Survey Outline document, also attached at the bottom of this section.

If you have additional questions you can contact our Support Team or call 716-270-0000 Monday through Friday 8:00am – 8:00pm EST.
