Brightspace offers a robust quiz creation and administration tool with several customizable options that make it ideal for assessment, pre-assessment, and acknowledgment of course policies. The Quizzes tool enables you to create and manage points-measured assessments. The following guide provides detailed steps on the quiz creation process.
- On the navbar, click Assessments and select Quizzes.
- On the Manage Quizzes page, click New Quiz.
- Enter a name for your quiz.
- In the Questions area, click Add Existing or Create New. Follow the steps below to either create new individual questions, create new questions by section or import questions from the question pool
Creating New Questions
- Select Create New, New Question and the type of question.
- Enter the question text and use the Options menu to set advanced criteria.
- Click Save for the main Question Editor page, Save and New to create another question of the same type or Save and Copy to create a new question identical to the question you just created.
Creating New Questions by Section
Sections can be used as a method to group and organize questions within Quizzes.
- Select Create New and then Section.
- Enter a section title.
-To hide the section title from learners, select the Hide Section Title from students check box. - Enter the Section Text.
-To hide the section text from learners, select the Hide Section Text from students check box. - To shuffle questions within this section, select the Shuffle questions in this section check box
- Click Save or from the Save drop-down menu click either Save and New or Save and Copy.
Adding Questions Using the Question Pool
- Select Create New and then Question Pool.
- Enter a Question Pool Title.
- Specify the number of questions from the pool that you want to appear to learners and how many points learners will receive for each question they answer correctly. The appropriate number of questions will be chosen randomly for each quiz attempt.
- Click Browse Question Library, search for and select the individual or group of questions you want to add and then click Import.
- Click Save.
Importing Questions From your Computer
- Click Add Existing and then Upload a File.
- Drag and drop your CSV file or IMS QTI compliant course package (ZIP folder) or click Browse Files and select the file you wish to upload
Please note: If you do not have the proper CSV template, you can download templates from Brightspace.
Importing Questions From the Question Library
The Question Library is a good place to store, organize, easily access and see statistics for all your questions within a course. As a a central repository, it stores and archives questions which you can reuse within a course.
- Click Add Existing and then Browse Question Library.
- In the Source Section drop-down list, choose the Collection Root or a specific section from which existing questions reside.
- Select the check boxes beside the questions you want to import, then click Add.
Importing Questions From the Learning Repoitory
- Click Add Existing and then Import from Learning Repository.
- You can use the search bar to Search For repositories you wish to import questions from or click Show Repositories to see which University at Buffalo Repositories are available to select questions from.
- When you find the file you want to import, select the option button next to the object and click Select.

Creating an EchoVideo link in Brightspace
For disciplines that make use of the EchoVideo platform, follow the instructions below to create a link in Brightspace for your EchoVideo content.

Reusing old course content in Brightspace
Over the course of 2022, instructor-created content from 2019-2022 LIU Class course sites will be moved into LIU Brightspace as reference material, where you may choose to reuse it to build your new Brightspace course sites. It is important to note that this content will be moved into corresponding LIUBrightspace “Reference Sites” under the equivalent term — content from a Spring 2022 LIU Classes course site will be moved into a corresponding Spring 2022 LIU Brightspace reference site; it will not be moved into your active Brightspace course sites, action IS required on your part if you choose to reuse this content.

Create an interactive gaming experience to improve engagementGame Based Learning (GBL) is the use of games to enhance the learning experience. Incorporating game based mechanics, visual design, and thinking into a course can help organizations improve learner motivation and engagement. Learners who are engaged are more inspired to succeed. A highly interactive gaming experience is something that many learners are already comfortable with. They can proceed at their own pace and get immediate feedback about their progress. In a game based environment, learners work towards a set goal. A risk-free setting encourages experimentation by letting them choose their own actions. They can even repeat a step if they need to. Instructors can determine the scope and depth of the gaming experience, implementing game based learning that fits unique needs and objectives. In the spirit of gaming, learners can personalize their learning experience by creating their own unique character (an avatar) using the Create Avatar process. The avatar is visible when learners access the Game Map. Gamifying a course using awards in Brightspace
In Brightspace there is an awards system that you can set up with conditions that will grand a student that award when the conditions are met.
From your course menu go to Class tools > Awards> Course Awards.
From there you Click “Add Award to Course” then click “Create”.
Give the Award a name, a description that explains how to claim the award and select if it’s a certificate or a badge. A certificate will issue a pdf certificate that you create.
Set the availability and expiration dates if any
Choose an icon that best fits the award, or you can create your own. Set the issuer information and email then click save and close.
Finally, Click to edit the properties and you can set the credits and the conditions under which the award is given
Adding a TA to your Course
- Click on Classlist in the navigation bar.
- Click Add Participants and then Add Existing User.
- Enter the BNumber or name of the individual and click the magnifying glass.
- Scroll down to select the checkbox next to the user.
- Scroll to the right to change the role to TA and choose the course name from the dropdown list.
- Click Enroll Selected Users.

Before using Microsoft teams with Brightspace it is highly recommended to add “lms.liu.edu” to the cookies exception list using the instructions in the following link.
To Add a Microsoft Teams link to your course do the following:
- Go into the module of your choice where you want to put the link
- Click on the “Existing Activities” button and select External Learning Tools
- Click on Microsoft Teams
To Create a Microsoft Teams meeting from within the course do the following:
- Click on the Microsoft teams link item
- Enter the name of your meeting ans set the date/time and schedule
- You MUST add participants or the meeting will not start.

Why is "CONVERTED" in my class title?
This is a course that was converted from Blackboard. It is an old course. You will not use this course as a real, teaching shell, but you can import content from it into a future course shell.
What BlackBoard Features will be Available in Brightspace
Many of the features that are commonly used in Blackboard will be available in Brightspace, including:
- Announcements
- Grades
- Content – files, pages, links
- Discussions
- Folders/Modules (called Modules in Brightspace)
- Tests (called Quizzes in Brightspace)
- Third-party tools like Turnitin, Zoom, etc.
Where is the Content I had in my Blackboard course folders?
Content is organized in the Content section of the course. Folders are now Modules and Sub-modules. You can add modules and sub-modules as needed, rearrange and rename files as well as add additional content.

- Scroll down to the My Courses widget.
- Use the left and right arrows in the widget to scroll to the desired term.

Introduction
LIU licenses and deploys Brightspace as its designated online course learning system. The following describes the LIU Brightspace procedures that are in place.
Section 1: Retention/Deletion of Courses
With the Fall 2023 transition from Blackboard to Brightspace coming to an end, courses on Brightspace will be made unavailable to students and instructors and eventually deleted per schedule below.
- One Semester after a course ends, the course will be made unavailable to students enrolled in the course. The course will remain available to instructors associated with the course.
- Two years after a course ends, the course will be made unavailable to instructors associated with the course. The course will remain on Brightspace servers, but will only be accessible by Brightspace administrators.
- Such a course will remain on Brightspace servers for one extra semester(after the first 2 years), then be deleted entirely. This offers a one-semester grace period to instructors who forget to copy course materials to their personal storage, while ensuring that only a limited number years of courses remain on Brightspace servers at a time.
This schedule encourages students and instructors to take responsibility for maintaining personal copies of relevant course materials, instead of relying on Brightspace as indefinite storage, while also allowing instructors to take advantage of course copy tools within Brightspace and providing time for most incomplete grades to be resolved.
Section 2: Brightspace Accounts
Availability
Brightspace accounts are available to all LIU faculty, students, and staff having a valid myLIU account and registered for courses in the current semester.
User name/password
A valid LIU Login ID and password associated with faculty, student, or staff status is required to gain full access to Brightspace. The LMS is also protected with 2Factor Authentication.
The LIU email address identified with your LIU ID is automatically imported into Brightspace and associated with the corresponding Brightspace user account.
Section 3: Brightspace Course Shells
Faculty/instructor access to course sites
Brightspace course shells are automatically created for every course section 3 months before the beginning of the start of any semester. A faculty member identified as an “instructor” for a course is automatically added to the corresponding Brightspace course/s in the instructor role during course registration.
Departments or programs are responsible for identifying course instructors with the University Registrar to have the right assignment of faculty(instructor) to a course. Instructors who do not appear in the schedule must contact the department or program offering the course to affect any revisions.
IT cannot add or delete any course instructor or students, neither can create a new course that is set through the schedule of classes published list (https://webapps3.liu.edu/courses/). All requests for add/modify instructor and courses needs to be addressed through the Registrar’s office.
Student access to course shells
Once a Brightspace course site has been created, students who officially register for that course – and are so identified in myLIU– will automatically be added to the Brightspace course site within 24 to 48 hours. Students are automatically removed from a given course in Brightspace if – for any reason – they are no longer identified on the myLIU roster.
Students will have access to their current semester Brightspace Courses a week before the start of the semester.
Managing course content
Each instructor is individually and fully responsible for adding, revising and removing course content for any Brightspace course shells to which the faculty member is assigned in a timely manner.
Enrolling additional instructors, TAs and course builders
Additional instructors access needs to be requested through the Registrar. TAs, and course builders addition request has to be emailed to: it@liu.edu at least a week before its required.
Enrolling additional students
No individual can be identified as a student participant in a Brightspace course shell unless the individual is officially registered in the class for the given course section.
Instructor access to course sites after the semester has concluded
Brightspace course shells (with associated content) remain accessible to instructors for two years after the end of the semester in which they were taught. After that the course is unavailable to instructors.
** The course will remain on Brightspace servers, but will only be accessible by Brightspace administrators only. Five years after a course ends, the course will be deleted from Brightspace.
Student access after the semester has concluded
Brightspace course shells (with associated content) remain accessible to Learner(Students) for one semester after the end of the semester in which they were registered. The course will remain available to instructors associated with the course.
When a given Brightspace course shell is designated as unavailable, any student seeking access to course content must contact the instructor, of the program offering the course.
Limits on file size and course Shells size
To facilitate fast access to course materials, instructors are strongly encouraged to minimize file size when scanning documents or producing video or audio files. However, even when using efficient compression methods, video and audio files may be quite large, necessitating consideration of other file storage options. Instructors are encouraged to contact the Teaching & Learning Centers at your campuses for Video storage and large file accommodation.
Copyrighted Material
Each instructor and student is individually and fully responsible for ensuring that materials placed on a Brightspace course shells comply with all applicable copyright provisions and related governance. Note particularly that online access to third party work is meant to approximate classroom access.
Instructors are encouraged to provide students with specific guidelines regarding appropriate/inappropriate uses of course materials.
Accessibility
Brightspace course sites and associated content (e.g., PowerPoint presentations, videos, and audio files) should be accessible to individuals with disabilities who may be using assistive technology devices such as screen readers. Faculty should consult guidelines for universal design, which include elements such as alternative text for images, transcripts for audio, and subtitles for video.
Retention of Student work
Each instructor is individually and fully responsible for retaining student work submitted to a Brightspace Shell. Instructors have full access to student work on a given Brightspace course shell for two years after the end of the semester in which the course was conducted. Thereafter, course sites are archived by LIU IT. Archived Brightspace course shells may be retrieved, if necessary, on request. Such requests must be accompanied by compelling justification and submitted to the Brightspace Administrator at it@liu.edu, using the IT HelpDesk.
Section 4: Brightspace Organizations
Only Department Faculty/Admin/Staff may request a Brightspace Organization site to support a Departmental related function or activity beyond specific courses. Such a site is denoted a “Brightspace Organization”.
Interested parties should submit a detailed request to it@liu.edu identifying the organization and the individual responsible for managing the Organization (“Instructor”). Once established, the Brightspace Administrator will train the Leader on procedures for managing the site. The request should come with detailed rationale of who will be managing the site and the specific reasons for such a request. Highlight the problems in hand and how and organization will handle that. Please make sure the departmental head and Deans are copied on these requests.
Some caveats:
During the time period when a course is maintained on Brightspace servers but not available to an instructor, Brightspace administrators can grant temporary access to that instructor upon request, to allow the instructor to copy course materials to another Brightspace course or to personal storage. Requests should be submitted via it@liu.edu.
Exceptions to the standard availability and deletion schedule can be requested by instructors and school administrators. Exception requests should be submitted via it@liu.edu, and must be approved by representatives of the University Registrar.
Note that once deleted, a course cannot be retrieved, so all exception requests should be made before the end of the grace period. (If students want access to a course beyond the one-semeter window after the course ends, they should speak with their instructors.)
Some very large courses, that is, courses that occupy an unusual amount of disc space on Brightspace servers, will need to be managed ahead of the standard availability and deletion schedule. The LIU IT team will identify such courses during occasional reviews, and work with instructors to reduce course sizes or move content(large videos and multimedia files) from these courses to other platforms.
Similarly, any course content published to a learning repository or student portfolio on Brightspace will continue to be available after the course becomes unavailable. Also, Brightspace allows students to easily download all downloadable instructor-generated content from a course to a .zip file for later or offline use. For assistance with using these Brightspace tools, contact it@liu.edu.
The above guideline does not apply to courses and organizations created manually on Brightspace, only courses automatically generated through integration with LIU student information systems (SIS). Manually created courses and organizations will be reviewed occasionally to determine if they are still needed.

Until that date, faculty, staff, and students can still log in at blackboard.liu.edu to view and download content and data from past courses. After August 31st, neither faculty nor students nor staff will have access to materials and student submissions directly on Blackboard.

Access your submitted and graded paper through Tools –> My Grades. Click on the Assignment name. On the Review Submission History screen, click on the Download icon to download your submitted paper. |
Downloading file attachments:Files such as PDFs and PowerPoints that your instructors have uploaded to their Blackboard courses can be downloaded for you to keep on your personal computer.

Access the individual files in your course content, and manually save those on your computer. |
Copying your grades:While there is no way to download a version of your Grades in Blackboard, you can highlight the information on the My Grades page and paste them into an Excel spreadsheet if you wish to keep a record of them. Please note that this will not be considered an official grade record.

Downloading Instructor Assignment Comments
Notice: If there are several assignments created in the course be aware that the download process must be done for every assignment submission
Steps To Download Instructor Assignment Comments
- Go into the grade center and locate the column where graded assignments exists.
- Hover you mouse of the graded assignment and select the submission attempt to launch and preview graded submission with comments once the crocodoc window launches.
- Click on the download arrow to download the assignment submission with comments
- The pdf document will appear in the browser window which allows you to download or print the file.

Notice: If there are several assignments created in the course be aware that the download process must be done for every assignment column that appears in the grade center
Steps To Download Student Assignment Submissions
- Go into the Grade Center and locate the column for the assignment submissions that you want to download.
- Click on the chevron (down-arrow) next to the assignment title and select Assignment File Download in the drop-down list.
- When the window launches select specific student submissions to download -OR- select the check box in the header bar to choose all available submissions then click Submit.
- In the pop-up window, select Download assignment now to download and save the file onto your computer (Notice: file will download as a zip file)
- Click OK to return to the Grade Center.Once all assignments have been downloaded locate and click on the zip file to extract the data. Be aware that you can preview a word document and pdf file; however, a txt file cannot be previewed.

Steps To Export and Grades in the Grade Center
- Go into the Grade Center to locate and select download from the drop-down arrow next to Work Offline.
- In the Download Grades window, leave default settings for DATA, OPTIONS and SAVE LOCATIONS; and click Submit.
- Click the DOWNLOAD button to download and store the file locally.
- The file will download and save as an Excel File.
- Locate and launch the excel file to preview the downloaded grade center.
