How can I read a CRES-encrypted message received at my LIU mail account?

When an email message is encrypted by the Cisco Registered Envelope Service (CRES), it is encrypted for the recipient’s email address alone. If you have a LIU mail account, messages sent to you at username@my.liu.edu may automatically be forwarded to you at username@my.liu.edu. This means that the address for which the message is encrypted is not necessarily the address in the message’s “To:” line. You will need to examine and possibly adjust the address on an incoming CRES-encrypted message in order to read it.

Note
The instructions here address the situation when an Long Island University student receives an encrypted message sent from an LIU email system (e.g., from a faculty or staff member’s Exchange account). Other situations might require different solutions, including:

  • You receive an encrypted message from a non-LIU source, these messages will have been encrypted by that source’s systems.
  • You receive an encrypted message from an LIU source that was a reply to or a forward of an earlier message, or was composed and sent from the CRES system; these messages will have been encrypted at Cisco, not at LIU.
  • You receive an encrypted message that has been autoforwarded, either from LIU or from another account, or by your email client. See At LIU, how do I forward my email?

In these cases, follow the instructions in How can I read a CRES-encrypted message? If you cannot view the message, see Why can I not read a CRES-encrypted message? If you have forwarded your email, try to determine the address to which the envelope was originally sent, and use that address to register and read the message.

Recipients of encrypted messages will receive an email message stating “You have received a secure message”, with an attachment named securedoc.html or securedoc_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.html (e.g., securedoc_20121027T114704.html). This securedoc file is the Cisco Registered Envelope.

First-time users

The first time you open a securedoc envelope with your LIU mail account, you must register your LIU mail address with CRES.

  1. Save the securedoc envelope to your computer, and open it in your web browser.
  2. You will see an image of an envelope with information about the email message:
    • If the “To:” line has your LIU email address (username@liu.edu), click REGISTER to begin the CRES registration process.
    • If the “To:” line has your campus domain address (username@liu.edu), click My address is not listed, type in your LIU email address (username@liu.edu), and then click SUBMIT.On the next page, verify that your LIU email address is in the “To:” line, and then click REGISTER.
    Note
If you open the securedoc file from within a web-based email client, you might not see the REGISTER button; instead, you will see a page with an OPEN button. Click OPEN; you will be directed to a page with a link to the new user registration form.
  3. In the new user registration form, fill in the fields, including your name, password, security phrase, and security questions. Use a unique password; do not use your LIU passphrase. Click Register.
  4. After you have completed the web form, you will receive a separate confirmation email message. In that message, click Click here to activate this account to complete your CRES registration.

You will see a web page confirming that you have activated your CRES account, and you can view the encrypted message using the directions in the “Existing users” section below.

Existing users

  1. Save the securedoc envelope to your computer, and open it in your web browser. (First-time users can simply refresh the page.)
    • If your campus.edu address appears in the “To:” field, click Select a different address. Select Address not listed from the drop-down menu, type in your LIUmail address, and then click SUBMIT.
    • If your full LIUmail address appears in the “To:” field, you do not need to change the address.
  2. Enter your CRES password and click OPEN to view the encrypted message and any attachments. If you entered a personal security phrase during registration, that phrase will appear when you click the password field. This allows you to be certain that you are providing your password to the genuine CRES site.

You can reply, reply to all, or forward the message; it will be re-encrypted when you reply or forward.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][fusion_portfolio content_length=”default” layout=”grid-with-text” portfolio_title_display=”” portfolio_text_alignment=”” portfolio_layout_padding=”” excerpt_length=”” cat_slug=”” filters=”yes” boxed_text=”default” picture_size=”default” columns=”1″ column_spacing=”12″ number_posts=”10″ strip_html=”default” pagination_type=”default” one_column_text_position=”floated” /][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
