How can I read a CRES-encrypted message?

[/fusion_text][fusion_separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”15px” bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””/][fusion_text]Long Island University uses Cisco IronPort to encrypt email containing certain sensitive data and identifiable protected health information; see What is sensitive data, and how is it protected by law? and What is protected health information (PHI)? First-time recipients of messages encrypted by Cisco IronPort must register with Cisco Registered Envelope Service (CRES) before they can view the message content.
Recipients of these messages will receive an email message stating “You have received a secure message”, with an attachment named securedoc.html or securedoc_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.html (e.g., securedoc_20111027T114704.html). This securedoc file is the Cisco Registered Envelope.

First-time users

The first time you open a securedoc envelope with a given external email account (i.e., you will need to perform these registration steps once for each external account, when it first receives an encrypted message), you will need to register your account with CRES.

1. Save the securedoc envelope to your computer, and open it in your web browser.
2. You will see an image of an envelope with information about the email message. Verify that the “To:” line displays your email address, and then click REGISTER to begin the CRES registration process.If the “To:” line does not display your email address, or does not display the address where you received the envelope, click My address is not listed, type in the correct address, and then click SUBMIT. On the next page, verify your email address, and then click REGISTER.

   Note
   If you are using LIU mail see the note at the top. If you open the securedoc envelope from within a web-based email client (e.g., Gmail), you might not see the REGISTER button; instead, you will see a page with an OPEN button. Click OPEN; you will be directed to a page with a link to the new user registration form.

3. In the new user registration form, fill in the fields, including your name, password, security phrase, and security questions. Use a unique password; do not use your LIU passphrase. Click Register.
4. After you have completed the web form, you will receive a separate confirmation email message. In that message, click Click here to activate this account to complete your CRES registration.

You will see a web page confirming that you have activated your CRES account, and you can view the encrypted message using the directions in the “Existing users” section below.

Existing users

1. Save the securedoc envelope to your computer, and open it in your web browser. (First-time users can simply refresh the page.)
2. Verify that the “To:” line displays your email address.If the “To:” line does not display your email address, or does not display the address where you received the envelope, click Select a different address. Select Address not listed from the drop-down menu, type in the correct address, and then click SUBMIT.
3. Enter your CRES password and click OPEN to view the encrypted message and any attachments.If you entered a personal security phrase during registration, that phrase will appear when you click the password field. This allows you to be certain that you are providing your password to the genuine CRES site.
